Okay, so it's over half a year in advance of the actual ride but I wanted to write something in this section and see if it starts filling up.
Anyway, there's a 100km/64miles long (very flat, only one hill) ride taking place in County Down, Northern Ireland on June the 3rd, 2006. You can see a few details here.
It seems to have been running for a few years and gets around 600 to 700 people taking part in it, despite very little advertising.
As with a lot of such rides, the entrance fee goes towards a charity. In this case, it's the RICS. To be honest, I don't know what that is. The only thing I know that stands for is Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. If that's the case, I'm not sure quite how deserving the charity is. I can't imagine our entrance fee really goes to supplement chartered surveyors' wages however. At least I hope it doesn't. I'm sure it would all make more sense with some deeper (ie. any) delving on my part,
Anyway, I took part in this cycle last year (for the first time) and, despite another cyclist knocking me off my bike and then cycling on regardless, it was good fun. The cyclists taking part come in all shapes and sizes. You get plenty of people who scarcely cycle at all pottering about towards the back and the sprightlier club cyclists well ahead, at the front.
Whatever speed your cycling takes place at, you'll undoubtedly be able to stay in a group with others, if you want. Of course, it's important to remember a lot of the people taking part aren't used to cycling in groups and can be somewhat erratic in their cycling.
As I mentioned before, there's only about one hill on the whole journey and that's not terribly big itself, so it's a cycle most people would find well within their abilities.
There you go. Here's hoping some more immediate cycles get listed here. I'll be sure to add a few if I can think of them.
