The owner of the site, Brian, is my husband.
On Wednesday 12th September 2007 at approximately 6.15pm Brian was involved in a RTA. He is a semi-professional cyclist, as well as being car mad, and has been riding the same route, three to four times a week for years. He and his riding buddy, take this route as they have tested and tried various roads and paths to find this one, which has the least amount of potholes in the roadway and it is all left turns so they never have to pass across the traffic.
The driver of the car was driving with 'undue care and attention' that ultimately caused the collision that meant Bri had no chance on this day. He escaped with his life only because he wore a cycle helmet, a Giro Atmos Lone Star (being the Lance Armstrong fan he is), and again, he had undergone weeks of research before buying what he thought to be the best protection and it was. He remained critical for 48 hours, the longest two days of my life. Although he sustained life threatening injuries it is without doubt that had he had not have been wearing his helmet he would have died as a result. He did sustain major brain damage and severe injuries to the right side of his body and it will be many months, if at all, before he makes a full recovery although he is making amazing progress.
Our daughter and I had our lives shattered through the incompetence of someone else and have had to take each day as it comes. No one can prepare you for this ordeal. One minute you are walking round living a normal life and the next sat at your husband’s bedside praying he will make it through the night. I spent nights holding our ten year old daughter as she cried herself to sleep saying ‘Daddy didn’t deserve this’ and myself receiving an overwhelming onset of anger and despair.
We will get through this with the support of our family and friends. Again we will live a normal life although never the same as it were but who knows, it may even be better. It has been my disbelief the number of people I have seen not wearing a helmet whilst cycling since the accident. I have wondered why it is not law to wear a helmet whilst cycling on the road. When riding a motorbike you have to wear a helmet and when in a car you have to wear a seat belt, why are there not any safety laws for cyclists? One message that every person who rides a cycle can take from this is ALWAYS wear a helmet, 'cycle smart' for you and everyone who is around you and for drivers, please 'think bike'!!!
