I've just got a Garmin Edge 305
All I can say is, if you can afford it then get one there fantastic as a training aid - racing partner.

Hi all, Garmin? I came out of a cafe with an O.S. mapin my back pocket and a motorist was heard to say "what does a cyclist need a map for". They must think we don't go very far!

Hi guys Until recently I used to use the Garmin eTrex Legend GPS unit as a bit of fun whilst out riding. It has a thing called a base map built in which basically displays a map with street names on it and is great as a nagivation aid (for those times when you get lost ). It also keeps track of stuff like average speed, distance, actual route taken (tracklog) and some other things which can be downloaded onto your PC as for a bit of post ride analysis. Had a bit of a bonus at work so decided to splash out on the Edge 305. Superb unit, tracks HR, cadence, speed, distance, route and has a really cool feature called courses/virtual partner. Basically you can use the details of a previous ride as a bench mark for future rides - you can then race against yourself to try and improve your performance, adds a little fun to those lonely, dark nights . The actual route ridden can be saved as a .gpx file which can then be loaded into loads of mapping programs like memory map and Google maps to get a really cool ordanence survey style map of the route. If you have a .gpx file you can get a google map using www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?form=google by uploading the GPS data - and best of all the map if free. [Brian] - if you're thinking about supporting GPS on the new look website, would be cool .gpx files could be posted and shared with other cyclists, as they can be downloaded to GPS units and used for navigating routes Happy riding guys, at least the nights are gettin lighter

Hmm, good point John, basically with the MapSource metroguide, which I used with my eTrex legend you could save as a .gpx file. However, Garmin have been a little sneaky I think with the training centre as you can only export as a History Database File (Training Centre -> File -> Export History) . If you export the history what you end up with is a file which stores all your tracklog info in a format I think is specific to the Garmin and of no immediate use in other programs like Google Maps or Memory Map. Heres the trick though, as a programmer, I had a poke around in the history file and found that it contained all the same information as the GPX file format but presented in a different format. So to allow me to get a GPX file out of the Training Centre export file, I wrote a simple program which converts the history file into a GPX file. once you have a gpx file it is a lot more useful as loads of mapping programs support this format. The program is written using the programming language Java which requires something called a JVM program to be installed on your computer to run my program, the JVM is free to download from java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html but is around 15mb in size. I'm in the process of converting it to a standard .exe program which can run standalone, but need a few more days yet. I can send you the java stuff I've got so far if its any use, or if its a little techy, I'll send another posting which I've got a standalone program which will be easier to run. Hope that all makes sense

Ok, spent a few hours working on a nice simple program with fisher price instructions to help convert the TC history files into GPX files. If you want to use it send me your e-mail address I'll send the stuff through (about 700Kb total). My e-mail is mezza2000@btinternet.com.

Hi Mezza,
FYI I just read on the memory map website it is now possible to use the output from the edge to display on V5. Only just got mine so no chance to try yet.

Cheers for the info Gibbo, I'm stuck with MM v4 at the mo and can't justify (to the wife!) the upgrade costs to V5- have to let us know if it has any good features which might convince me to splash the cash for V5.
